American Avocets in Shallow Water

American Avocets are elegant shorebirds found in wetlands, shallow lakes, mudflats, and coastal estuaries throughout North America. During the breeding season, they display striking cinnamon-colored heads and necks that contrast beautifully with their bold black-and-white wings. Known for their long upturned bills and graceful movements, avocets forage by sweeping their bills through shallow water in search of small aquatic prey. This watercolor captures a small gathering of American Avocets wading through calm water, their reflections adding to the quiet beauty of the scene.
